Planning a wedding is an exciting journey filled with countless decisions, but one of the most significant moments for any bride is finding the perfect wedding dress. Some say it’s just a dress that you wear one day and it doesn’t really matter. By some I mean me about 6 months ago.
As I got looking for a dress though, I found that while this will be just a moment, I will remember it forever. I will look at my wedding photos for years to come. I had two things in mind while shopping for mine: budget and something that is unapologetically me.
In this blog post, I’ll tell you how I found my dress, one that made me feel beautiful and confident.
1. Start with Inspiration
Before you even step foot in a bridal boutique, it’s essential to gather inspiration. Browse through wedding magazines, Pinterest boards, and Instagram feeds to discover styles that resonate with you. Create a mood board that reflects your vision, including colors, fabrics, and silhouettes. This will help you articulate your preferences when you start shopping.
Tips for Gathering Inspiration:
- Create a Pinterest Board: Pin your favorite dresses, styles, and wedding themes.
- Follow Bridal Designers: Keep an eye on the latest collections from your favorite designers.
- Attend Bridal Shows: These events can provide a wealth of ideas and allow you to see dresses up close.
In this step, I realized that I hated lace and frills. I could not possibly wear a mermaid or trumpet style and in no way will I walk down the asile without straps.
2. Set a Budget
Wedding dresses can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. Before you start trying on dresses, establish a budget that includes not just the gown but also alterations, accessories, and cleaning. This will help narrow down your options and prevent any heartache later on.
Budgeting Tips:
- Research Average Costs: Understand the price range for the styles you love.
- Consider Sample Sales: Many boutiques offer discounts on sample dresses.
- Factor in Alterations: Budget for any necessary adjustments to ensure a perfect fit.
3. Choose the Right Bridal Boutique
Finding the right bridal boutique can make all the difference in your dress shopping experience. Look for a shop that aligns with your style and offers a welcoming atmosphere. Read reviews, ask for recommendations, and schedule appointments to visit a few different places.
What to Look for in a Bridal Boutique:
- Variety of Styles: Ensure they carry a range of designers and silhouettes.
- Personalized Service: Look for boutiques that offer one-on-one consultations.
- Comfortable Environment: You want to feel relaxed and supported during your appointment.
4. The Dress Shopping Experience
When it’s time to try on dresses, bring along a few trusted friends or family members who understand your style and can provide honest feedback. Wear comfortable undergarments and consider bringing shoes that are similar in height to what you plan to wear on your wedding day.
Tips for Trying on Dresses:
- Keep an Open Mind: You may be surprised by what looks good on you.
- Take Photos: Document your favorites to help you remember each dress.
- Trust Your Instincts: If a dress makes you feel beautiful, it’s worth considering.
I found my dress in the very first boutique I went to. I knew it but the color wasn’t right. It was ivory and not as white as I wanted so I didn’t get it. I went to two other store after that and tried on over a dozen dresses but none of them made me feel quite like the first one.
5. The Final Decision
Once you’ve tried on several dresses, it’s time to make a decision. Take your time and don’t rush the process. Consider how each dress makes you feel, and think about how it fits into your overall wedding vision. If you’re torn between a couple of options, revisit the boutiques for a second fitting.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
- Does it fit my budget?
- Do I feel comfortable and confident in it?
- Does it align with my wedding theme?
6. Alterations and Final Touches
After you’ve chosen your dress, it’s time for alterations. Most dresses will require some adjustments to ensure a perfect fit. Schedule fittings well in advance of your wedding day, and communicate clearly with your seamstress about any changes you want.
Final Touches:
- Choose Accessories: Select a veil, jewelry, and shoes that complement your gown.
- Plan for Preservation: After the wedding, consider having your dress cleaned and preserved.
