Let me preface this post by informing you that I am not a professional baker. I love baking and I did make my own wedding cake. But, if you are looking for baking advice, this is not it.
This post is more about the logistics of making my own wedding cake and my experience.
Why I Chose to Bake My Own Wedding Cake
Baking my own wedding cake was a decision rooted in both practicality and sentimentality. I found the idea of crafting a cake with my own hands to be incredibly meaningful and it saved us quite a bit of money.
Planning the Perfect Cake
1. Choosing the Flavor
The first step in my cake-making journey was deciding on the flavor. After much deliberation, I settled on chocolate because that was our prefered flavour.
2. Deciding on the Design
Next, I envisioned the design. I wanted a simple yet elegant look that would complement our wedding theme. We opted for a small two-tiered cake adorned with fondant flowers. I sketched out my ideas and created a mood board to visualize the final product.
3. Gathering Supplies
With the flavor and design in mind, I made a list of all the ingredients and tools I would need.
Baking the Perfect Cake
I practice making versions of the cake over the 6-8 months of our engament to perfect my method. I learned about frosting, decorating, using fondant, and more. I made mistakes like accidentally using powdered sugar instead of baking soda, and quite a few others.
The Big Reveal
On the day of the wedding, I transported the cake carefully to the venue, ensuring it was stable and secure. When it was time for the cake cutting, I felt a wave of pride as I stood before our guests, presenting the cake I had poured my heart into. It was in no way perfect, but it was mine and I loved it.
