10 Healthy Habits to Adopt in Your 20s and 30s

Your 20s and 30s are a critical time for establishing healthy habits that will benefit you for the rest of your life. By adopting these habits, you’ll be better equipped to handle the challenges of adulthood, reduce your risk of chronic diseases, and improve your overall well-being.

Here are 10 healthy habits to adopt in your 20s and 30s:

Habit #1: Develop a Consistent Sleep Schedule

Rest is essential for physical and mental rejuvenation. When you rest, your body repairs and regenerates tissue, builds muscle, and strengthens your immune system. Your brain also gets a chance to process and consolidate information, making you more focused, creative, and productive. Neglecting rest can have serious consequences on your physical and mental health, relationships, and productivity.

  • Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night to help regulate your body’s internal clock and improve the quality of your sleep.
  • Establish a bedtime routine to signal to your body that it’s time to sleep, such as reading a book or taking a warm bath.

I only recently started paying attention to my habits around resting and fixing my sleeping routine changed my life. I used to strugle a lot with getting to sleep, getting enough sleep, and waking up early. But after working on developing a good rest ethic, I have seen improvements in all these areas and more.

Habit #2: Exercise Regularly

I don’t think I need to talk about the importance of regular exercise here so I’ll just say this. It’s super important.

  • Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming, most days of the week.
  • Incorporate strength training exercises into your routine, such as weightlifting or bodyweight exercises, to build muscle and boost metabolism.

I currently try to walk in the morning 3/5 days in the week, run 3/5 days, and get at least 3 strength training sessions. Aside from that, I aim for at least 7.5k steps daily and I try to strectch every day. It’s good to find exercise that you enjoy, I love playing frisbee and pickleball and these are just some of the ways I add exercise and movement to my life.

Habit #3: Eat a Balanced Diet

Alright. My body is no longer aable to process all these sugary foods and drinks like it used to and I don’t have the desire to have my body working against me. I started treating y body like a temple in terms of what I put inside it and it has changed my mood, energy levels, and ability to focus.

  • Focus on whole, unprocessed foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
  • Aim to cook at home most nights of the week, using fresh ingredients and simple recipes.

Habit #4: Stay Hydrated

We need water and being midly dehydrated is more common than you might think.

  • Drink at least 8 cups (64 ounces) of water each day.
  • Infuse your water with fruits or herbs for added flavor and nutrition.

I like to add lemon to my water in the morning.

Habit #5: Get Regular Check-Ups

  • Visit your doctor at least once a year for a physical exam and to discuss any health concerns.
  • Stay up-to-date on recommended vaccinations and screenings, such as flu shots and Pap tests.

Habit #6: Get Financially Savvy

  • Build your emergency savings
  • Pay your debts
  • Make a retirement plan
  • Make sound investments

Habit #7: Practice Good Hygiene

  • Wash your hands frequently, especially during cold and flu season.
  • Showers or bathe regularly, and practice good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day.

Habit #8: Find a Career You Enjoy

We spend around 40 hours at work. That’s a big part of the average adult’s life so it’s good to spend that time doing something you don’t hate. I know firsthand what it’s like to wake up every morning dreading the better part of the day and to come home too drained and spent to spend time on anything else.

Habit #9: Build Strong Relationships

I think it’s harder to make friends as an adult. With all the responsibilities and business…

  • Nurture relationships with friends and family by scheduling regular check-ins and activities.
  • Join social clubs or groups to meet new people and expand your social network.

Habit #10: Prioritize Mental Health

  • Recognize the importance of mental health and seek help if you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, or other mental health concerns.
  • Practice self-care and prioritize activities that bring you joy and fulfillment.
By adopting these 10 healthy habits in your 20s and 30s, you’ll be well on your way to establishing a strong foundation for a lifetime of health and wellness. Remember, it’s never too early or too late to start making positive changes in your life. Start with small steps, and be patient with yourself as you work towards developing healthy habits that will benefit you for years to come!
