Why I Switched Job? Taking the Leap

Hey there, fellow adventurers in the world of engineering. Grab a comfy seat and a cup of your favorite brew because today, I’m going to tell you why I decided to switch jobs. If you’re curious about making a move, stick around.

After I graduated college, I started work immediately with a company that is relatively new to my city. It was a good job, and I learned a lot, but after a year there I moved to a different/bigger company, and here’s why:

Flexibility

First things first, let’s talk about the power of flexibility. Remember those times when you wanted to escape the cubicle farm and take your laptop to a cozy cafe, or maybe even work while soaking up some sunshine in the park? Well, guess what? I was there too! While I appreciated the structure of a traditional 9-to-5 job, I couldn’t shake the desire to have a little more say in when and where I worked.

While young engineers—like myself—need to have close rapport and mentors to grow. I think this doesn’t have to come at the price of a rigid schedule with a fixed location.

Bigger/More Projects

With a bigger company comes bigger projects. Although both big and small companies have their advantages, after working for both I think I prefer bigger companies. Bigger companies offer an opportunity to collaborate with a diverse range of professionals, each with their own unique perspective and skill set. The scale of projects is often grander, allowing for a deeper impact on a larger stage.

Taking the Leap

So, after much contemplation, I gathered up my courage and leaped. I decided to bid adieu to my cozy cubicle and embrace the exciting unknown of a bigger company that also offered the sweet promise of flexibility. Despite a small negative change in pay and benefits, I think this change helps me get closer to my ultimate goal of becoming an expert at what I do.

Making a decision like that is not easy, but if you know what you want then it helps. Is your current job bringing you closer to your ultimate goal? Do you have an ultimate goal?
