Why Should You Become a Licensed PE?

If you are researching this, you are likely familiar with the P.E. license and you’re debating whether the hassle is worth it. In my opinion, it absolutely is. The benefits of being a Professional Engineer far outweigh the work required to become one.

If you’re still on the fence, here are five reasons you should work towards getting a license.

Status

There is no question that there is a massive difference between being an Engineer in Training (EIT) or Engineering Intern (EI) and being a Professional Engineer (PE). There is an elevated status associated with the latter, which commands more respect. It shows that your peers have accepted you as one of their own.

Increases the trust factor

I’d much rather have my house plans made by someone who has a license. A license can improve the trust between the engineer and the client.

Money

The average salary for PEs is higher that of non-licensed engineers.

Career Development

If you want more responsibility at work, you have to bring in more value. A PE license allows you to do that by giving you the ability to sign and seal drawings. It also makes you someone with the potential to manage projects without supervision.

Marketability

This is a great selling point in the engineering industry. Even if a job does not require one to have a license, having one will give you an edge in a competitive market.
