A Lesson on the Value of Reflection

Reflection is a highly valuable asset when you’re seeking to make changes and improve. While setting goals and reaching milestones is important, reflecting on your progress and achievements can be the difference between you failing and succeeding.
If you’re still doubting the value of reflection, allow me to present a few of its benefits.

Reflection increases self-awareness.

Reflection helps track progress or lack thereof.

We spend days working and hoping that we are working in the right direction. A time of reflection will tell you whether or not you’ve made progress toward your goal to buy a car or a house.

Reflection forces you to reassess your values and re-align your priorities to your schedule.

It’s easy to lose focus when the days are so long, and all just blend together into an unending cycle. Are our days actually reflecting our priorities? Are we using our time the way we intend to or are we wasting endless hours on things of no value to us?

Reflection challenges you to identify problems and find solutions.

Now you know waking up at 5 am isn’t working. Consider alternatives. Is it possible to carve out the time you need somewhere else in the day?

Reflection creates a space for you to learn from your mistakes.

Reflection gives you feedback on your pace.

It’s important to give yourself deadlines and keep up with them.

Reflection helps decrease your blind spots.

Reflection increases intentionality.

Reflection helps with managing stress.

As July is starting, I want to encourage you to practice the skill of reflection. If you’re struggling to get started, here are the questions I am using:

  • Did you achieve the goals you set out to achieve in January?
  • Did you work on the long-term goals you have for 2023?
  • How have you grown these past few months?
  • What have you learned?
  • What has challenged you in those six months?
  • What behavior/habit do you want to continue in the second half of the year?
  • What behavior/habit do you want to stop in the second half of the year?
  • Who has been a support these past few months?
  • How have you seen God’s character on display these past few months?
  • What are 3 things you are grateful for?
