Choosing to make engineering my major was not an easy decision and I struggled with it for years even after I graduated. I have been working in the industry for a year now and I have gained a greater appreciation for what engineers do. I’m proud to call myself an engineer.
Engineering is a broad field and there are many specializations in engineering, but regardless of what you choose, these five things won’t change.
- You get to make a difference
This is one of the best things about being an engineer. As an engineer, the work you do has an impact on the world around you. This can be a scary idea because it’s so easy to make mistakes and engineering mistakes can cause huge problems. However, engineers can also have a positive impact on our community, and its future. Engineers play a crucial role in addressing pressing global challenges, such as climate change, renewable energy, healthcare, transportation, and more. Being an engineer means having the opportunity to contribute to a better future for individuals and communities worldwide. - You get to solve problems
If you like a challenge, engineering would be perfect for you. Engineers are faced with daily challenges that can range from fitting a pipe on a pre-existing road to solving the flooding problems of an entire city. Engineers are master puzzle solvers.
Whether it’s developing sustainable technologies, designing efficient systems, or creating groundbreaking inventions, engineers have the power to shape the future through their problem-solving abilities. - You get to be creative
This one goes along with the previous one. Engineers often have to think outside the box, turn it into a sphere, and sometimes even rebuild it completely. While engineers follow many guidelines and specifications, our work involves being creative and coming up with specific solutions for a particular set of conditions. - You get to learn forever
My first mentor told me that engineering school is all about learning how to learn and research. She is absolutely right. I have yet to use all the formulas I learned in school, but my struggle to learn them taught me that it’s often easier to learn something from someone who mastered it than it is to learn it by yourself.
Engineering is a dynamic field that constantly evolves with new technologies, research breakthroughs, and emerging trends. As an engineer, you will be continuously challenged to learn and adapt, keeping up with the latest advancements in your field. This constant learning and growth not only keep your work engaging but also offer opportunities for professional development and career advancement. - You get to work with amazing individuals
As engineers, we get to work in teams with other who have the same desire to learn and make an impact. Learning from each other is the way we grow, and we get to do that with every project.
I hope you choose to pursue this noble field and if you do, please send me a message. I would love to connect with you.
